Adult Composite (Tooth Colored) Filling
You may eat whenever anesthetic wears off. You may have sensitivity to cold for a few days, and you may have irritation around the gum tissue. Avoid cold and rinse with warm salt water rinses if these symptoms occur. Sensitivity should subside in a few days. Continue brushing and flossing your teeth as usual. Amalgam Adult (Silver Filling)
Do not chew or eat, until anesthetic wears off. Do not chew on side of mouth where restorations were done today. If both sides of mouth had treatment, chew only soft foods today. Normal eating can be resumed tomorrow. Sensitivity to cold is not uncommon after restorations. If sensitivity occurs, avoid cold drinks and foods. Sensitivity should subside in a few days. Soreness around gum tissue is not uncommon. Warm salt water rinses are recommended if soreness occurs. If you can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen; these are recommended for minor discomfort or pain. Crown Prep
After a tooth is prepared for a crown, a temporary crown is placed on the tooth.
The temporary crown will protect your tooth, until it is removed (at your appointment) to have your permanent crown or bridge seated. Do not chew on anything hard or sticky, or use any toothpicks or dental floss around/or on your temporary crown. It is cemented with temporary cement and may come off if these items or used on it. Continue to brush your teeth including your tooth with the temporary. Soreness around the gum tissue is not uncommon. Warm salt water rinses are recommended if this is a problem. Sensitivity to cold and pressure is not uncommon after a tooth has been prepared for a crown. If tooth is sensitive, avoid cold foods and drinks, also avoid hard foods. Sensitivity may not subside until after the permanent crown(s) are seated.
If you can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol); these are recommended for minor discomfort or pain. If you have any questions or problems, please call us.
Seat Crowns
After your crown or bridge is placed, you may have sensitivity to cold. Avoid cold food and drinks, if this is a problem. Sensitivity should subside in a few days to a few weeks. You may have gum irritation after the crown is placed. Warm salt water rinses for the next few days will help the gum to heal and will help relieve discomfort. You may experience some bleeding of the gum when brushing and flossing for the first few times. Continue brushing and flossing as usual and these symptoms should subside in a few days. Other

Please call our office if you have any questions. NOTE: This is a temporary sedative restoration. A permanent restoration NEEDS to be placed at a later appointment.
Root Canal Therapy
After root canal treatment you may have no noticeable symptoms. Some of the following symptoms may occur: sensitivity to pressure, sensitivity to cold and/or hot, and possible swelling. If you can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen; these are recommended for minor discomfort or pain.
If you experience swelling or severe pain, call our office; you may need to be prescribed an antibiotic and/or pain medication. A temporary filling or temporary crown, may have been used to seal the tooth; if so, you will need to return for a permanent restoration placement.
Extraction
To control bleeding and to promote clotting; keep a folded piece of gauze over extraction site. Keep pressure on gauze and replace it with a fresh piece when saturated. Slight bleeding may occur for up to 2 days. Do not do any heavy spitting or sucking through a straw today. Do not rinse out mouth today. Tomorrow rinse with warm salt water gently, several times a day, to promote healing. Some swelling may occur. Use cold compress, such as ice, on affected area for approx. 20 minutes at a time. You may continue using ice for 20 minutes on and off, for up to 5 hours. If severe swelling and/or fever is present, contact Dr. Loar and Associates or your family physician.
Eat only soft foods today and only after anesthetic wears off. Continue brushing and flossing your teeth. Be careful near the extraction site while healing is in progress. If antibiotics were prescribed, take all until finished. Use pain medication as needed. Please call our office if you have any questions.
Post Op on Delivery of Immediate Denture(s) / Partials
KEEP DENTURE(S) IN UNTIL THE MORNING AFTER SURGERY. Keeping the denture(s) in will create pressure on tissue and promote clotting. Slight bleeding can occur for up to 2-3 days. Use an ice compress on affected side(s) for 20 minutes on and off, for 5 to 6 hours. Eat soft foods and drink plenty of fluids for the first week. The day after surgery remove dentures, and rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water several times a day. You need to remove denture(s) carefully twice a day and clean denture(s) with a toothbrush and toothpaste or denture cleanser. You may sleep with your denture in for one week. THEN IT IS, IMPORTANT TO LEAVE YOUR DENTURE(S) OUT AT NIGHT WHILE SLEEPING. This promotes healthy gums and a healthy mouth. You will experience gum shrinkage over the next several weeks as your gums heal. You may also experience sore spots on your gums. Sore spots can be treated and adjustments can be made at recare visits. Call our office if you have any questions.
Fixed Bridge (Retainer Crowns)
After teeth are prepared for a bridge(and/or crowns), a temporary bridge is placed on the teeth. The temporary will protect your teeth, until it is removed (at your appointment) to have your permanent bridge seated. Do not chew on anything hard or sticky, or use any toothpicks or dental floss around/or on your temporary bridge. It is cemented with temporary cement and may come off if these items or used on it. Continue to brush your teeth including your temporary. Soreness around the gum tissue is not uncommon. Warm salt water rinses are recommended if this is a problem. Sensitivity to cold and pressure is not uncommon after teeth have been prepared for a bridge. If teeth are sensitive, avoid cold foods and drinks, also avoid hard foods. Sensitivity may not subside until after the permanent bridge is seated. If you can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen(Tylenol); these are recommended for minor discomfort or pain. Perio Scale and Root Plane
Do not chew or eat, until anesthetic wears off. You may have some of the following symptoms: Sensitivity to cold, soreness of gums, sensitivity to chewing pressure, and /or sore jaw muscles and/or joints. Avoid cold food and drinks if sensitivity to cold is present. Rinse with warm salt water rinses several times a day. If you were use prescribed any mouth rinse, use as directed.
If you can take acetaminophen(Tylenol) or ibuprofen, these are recommended for minor discomfort and pain. Please call our office if you have any questions.
